Report from Board Chair, Jeremy Babel

At each meeting, members of the Board are asked to bring motions to the table that are immediately actionable, and ideas or motions that need a significant block of time for discussion are deferred to one of our four Board priority teams which are focused on Mission and Marketing, Finance, Governance, and Equity and Access. Here is a summary of the motions approved at our August 2018 meeting.

As is customary, we approved the minutes from our prior meeting in April 2018 and approved the financial report submitted by our Treasurer, Rich Wyllie. Once a year, a budget committee meets and submits a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. It was presented and the Board approved the budget for this fiscal year. The Board Secretary is appointed yearly by the Board Chair. Lannette Jennings has been serving in this role for my entire time on the Board and was re-appointed and approved by the board for the upcoming year. As Board Chair, I am thankful for her work over the past years and am thankful she has agreed to serve in the role again. We then appointed George Reese to serve as Treasurer, taking over in April 2019 as Rich Wyllie, who has served in this role for many years, let us know in April his intent to “retire” from this position. We all thank Rich for his long standing service to ICTM. His expertise and historical perspective on ICTM will be greatly missed.

There was a motion to keep the ICTM conference in the fall for 2020, but that motion was pulled and to be further discussed by one of the four priority teams. NCTM is moving its annual conference to the fall starting with October 2020 in St. Louis. Please be sure to share your thoughts with any Board members regarding this important decision.

It has been an ongoing discussion from the April 2018 ICTM board meeting to allow non-ICTM members to receive ICTM awards. This change cannot be made by the ICTM Board as it is in the bylaws that “each nominee must be a member of ICTM.” This requires a change to the bylaws so a committee was formed to look at necessary changes to the bylaws. A vote by the membership will take place at the ICTM business meeting at the upcoming annual meeting. Any and all ICTM members are encouraged to attend the ICTM business meeting. Here are links the relevant documents for voting:

The marked-up version of the ICTM Constitution

It is important to the Board that we keep the needs and interests of our membership in mind as we make decisions throughout the year. With that in mind, there is a membership survey. To encourage members to participate in the survey, a motion was made to allocate $100 for prizes to be awarded to people randomly selected of those that complete the survey. Our meeting was then adjourned.

About Your New ICTM Directors:

John O'Malley IV

I am a newly elected 9-12 Director and I am excited to be a part of this organization. During the day you can find me teaching mathematics at Glenbrook South High School. In the evening you can find me at Starbucks and on Twitter finding new teaching ideas. I have taken advantage of a lot of opportunities ICTM has offered and I am excited to be able to promote and share many of them in the future with you. My teaching goals tend to focus on engagement in the classroom and I plan to implement that goal as a member of the ICTM board as well. I want to meet and work with teachers throughout the state to assist in collaborating and sharing the great work that is being done. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve you and will do my best to engage you in all things mathematical in the years to come.

Matthew Foster

Hello!  As your newly elected ICTM K-6 Director, please accept my thanks! Here's a little bit about my life in mathematics:

Currently, I am the K-8 Math Coordinator in Waukegan where I support approx. 450 teachers in best practices, curricula implementation, professional development, and student-centered coaching. To remain relevant, I continue teaching math as an adjunct professor at the College of Lake County.  In addition, I am involved in multiple districts outside Waukegan as a leader of the Complex Instruction Consortium (CIC), where you may have attended our free bi-annual group learning workshops.  My unique view of math stems from having practiced Architecture for 20+ years.

I hope to champion ICTM's partnership with K-6 teachers around the state in fresh, new ways. For example, this February, we expect to launch the first annual mini-conference for K-6 teachers to develop deeper mathematics pedagogy.  Please remember, I am your servant. Feel free to email me anytime!

John and Matthew will officially begin serving on the Board on October 19th, during the ICTM Annual Conference.
